Any component can be changed, except xerces. Make sure you are placing all the jars that compose a component in the lib directory. For example replacing fop.jar implies also replacing avalon.jar and batik jar. By the way, we tested the latest FOP and there are some problems with it. Sean Wheller wrote:

I have added the latest FOP (just the FOP.jar) but transforms fail. I assume some dependency on other files. When I role back it works.
The reason I am doing all this is to solve publishing problems. Sometimes the problem is in the DB XSL's and often that is the problem and I can solve it just by using a new version. But when that fails, it helps to start looking a tools like FOP. Sometimes an upgrade fixes the problem and then life goes on as normal.
