on Mac OS X, there is a character palette, available under the Keyboard menu.
On Mac OS X you can also use "Unicode Hex Input" as your input method. To do so
If you are not on Mac OS X the best you can get in the current version is defining a code template with the character as template content and insert the character at the position of the cursor with auto completion on demand (Ctrl+Space). You define a code template from menu Options -> Preferences -> Editor -> Templates -> Code Templates, you press Ctrl+Space in the editor where you want to insert the character and you select the name of the code template in the auto completion window.
