We plan for the beginning of next week the first oXygen 3 maintenance release. As you noticed, along with some fixes, it will improve the outliner to show the value of the first attribute and some of the text content of the element.
That'll be great. Long-term it would be nice to be able to configure exactly what's shown in the outline view (maybe by assigning relative XPath location paths to element types?), but this'll be a big help if only to show template match patterns in XSLT. I'll continue to collect little it-would-be-nice-if items, and spam you with them from time to time.
