What is better: bold the names or bold the values?

Hi, We need your feedback on one of the oXygen 10.1 features. We implemented a new XML Schema editor where XML Schemas can be edited visually. The properties of the selected component are available in a side view (Attributes view). Now, some attributes are specified by the user, some other have default values. For marking the specified ones we though of two possibilities: - bold the attribute names as you can see in http://www.oxygenxml.com/update/boldNames.jpg or - bold the values, as you can see in http://www.oxygenxml.com/update/boldValues.jpg Do you have a preference for any of these? Definitely bold names. Cheers, E. On 1/23/09 9:54 AM, "George Cristian Bina" <george@oxygenxml.com> wrote:

Great, looks nice!

Good question. Bolding the value emphasizes "what we typed down" so could seems more natural, while bolding the name emphasizes on the semantics of the attributes. So I would say the later. But really, both seems equally usable. An alternative (sorry, I know you asked for an answer, not a question :-p) would be to bold both, or just write them in the normal font while putting name and value of defaults in gray. This is maybe more intuitive: what we typed is "normal," while defaults are given less visual importance (the info is there, but more light.) Hope that helps, -- Florent Georges http://www.fgeorges.org/

I prefer the bolding of values because that is the thing your modifying. Bolding of the name implies something special about that name which is not the case here. -- Paul Ryan -----Original Message----- From: oxygen-user-bounces@oxygenxml.com [mailto:oxygen-user-bounces@oxygenxml.com] On Behalf Of George Cristian Bina Sent: Friday, January 23, 2009 8:55 AM To: Oxygen User Subject: [oXygen-user] What is better: bold the names or bold the values? George, I was going to disagree with Paul but, having looked back more carefully at what distinction the bold is intended to indicate, I would come down tentatively on the side of bolding the values. As I understand your question, the distinction you're drawing with regard to attributes is not intrinsic to those attributes, but is totally dependent on whether the user has entered a value in that instance. Am I right? In that case I think the distinction is a distinction of value, not of the attributes themselves, so it would make more sense to bold the value. (Or both.) My 2 cents... Thanks for asking. Lars

well, that's exactly how Netbeans does it - the name goes bold when you edit the value. (I would say taking inspiration from Netbeans when its come to the interface is always a good idea :) 2009/1/23 Lars Huttar <lars_huttar@sil.org>:

Bolding Attribute Names is the most natural. the Attribute Name is of prime importance for distinguishing what the Value pertains to. Any person who uses or has used a spreadsheet or graph layout will recognize intuitively the relationship.
or
- bold the values, as you can see in
