Keyboarding accented characters?

Please forgive me and point me in the right direction if this is available in a FAQ, but I have not found exactly this problem: With Oxygen 10.1 under Ubuntu 8.10 and a Norwegian Windows keyboard I have problems with characters that need the AltGr-combination. (And with some other keyboard-related setups, for instance I have a keyboard setup for Greek which works fine in all other programs than Oxygen) the top-right key on my keyboard is supposed to give accent-grave when i click this key first and then a character key for which there is an accent-grave combination. If I hold down the AltGr-key, click on this before mentioned key and then a character key for which *this* is meaningful, I get an acute accented character. But in Oxygen neither of these combinations work. On this same keyboard I am supposed to hold down AltGr and type "2" to get the "@". this also doesn't work in Oxygen, I just get the "2". It seems as if all the combination keys are non-functioning when I am typing in text in Oxygen. Are there any settings where I can turn on ordinary keyboard behaviour? Best regards, Espen S. Ore

Hello, Please tell me if the following steps can be used for reproducing the problem. I set the default keyboard layout to Norway on Ubuntu from menu System -> Preferences -> Keyboard -> Layouts and the option "Press Right Alt key to choose 3rd level" is selected from Layout Options -> Third level choosers. Right Alt key is called AltGr on some keyboards. I start up Oxygen and when I press Alt right + 2 I get "@". When I press Alt right + e, Alt right + y, Alt right + a I get "é", "ý", "à". I get the same characters in both Text mode and Author mode of Oxygen. Are they the expected characters? If not what characters do you get in other applications that you do not get in Oxygen and for what keys? Regards, Sorin Espen S. Ore wrote:

I use a Czech keyboard, but I do not set it in Oxygen - I set in in windows and Oxygen displays the appropriate characters. If you are using Windows, go to Control Panel (classic view), Regional and Languages, and select the keyboard you want. An icon on the task bar will let you switch between keyboards. Thank you for your quick reply! Basically Alt Right (AltGr on my keyboard) works in all other editors except for Oxygen. In addition the dead key accents I have on my keyboard (where I don't need to use the Alt Right) also don't work in oxygen but in everything else. And if I change keyboard to Greek keyboard - and this is especially important for my Oxygen use - this keyboard change is ignored in Oxygen but works again in everything else. I have just downloaded the oxygen 10.2 for Linux and will send a message if this makes any difference. Best regards, Espen Sorin Ristache skrev:

Hello, When you change the keyboard layout you have to restart Oxygen because the change of the layout does not change the input method in the Java virtual machine. That means the Greek layout is ignored if you set it while Oxygen is running. I set a Norwegian layout and I started Oxygen. I tried some Alt Right character combinations in 5 different applications and in Oxygen. The same characters are inserted in all applications. I do not have a key AltGr but I set the option "Press Right Alt key to choose 3rd level" in Layout Options -> Third level choosers (in Keyboard preferences). For example what is inserted on your Ubuntu machine in the Oxygen editor and in other editor application when you use the Norwegian layout and you press Right Alt + a, Right Alt + e, Right Alt + y? Maybe there are other settings that are different on your machine? How can I reproduce the problem? Regards, Sorin Espen S. Ore wrote:

Honestly I don't know how you can reproduce the problem. I just know that as late as in 2008 with the versions of oxygen and Ubuntu I was then using, I had no problems with typing in accented latin characters with my standard keyboard settings (normal Norwegian keyboard), and now I cannot although I can key them in in every other editing application I use. We will try to find a solution for that in a future version. Regards, Sorin Espen S. Ore wrote:

Some trial and error showed me that if I turned off the "Enable support to enter complex charaters" under Language support (Ubuntu/Kubuntu 8.10, running Gnome), then after a reboot Oxygen accepts the keyboard without problems. And what is more: it also accepts my change from Norwegian to Greek keyboard without restarting Oxygen ... OTOH I can see situations where I would like to be able to "Enable support to enter complex characters" also when I am using Oxygen, so please have a look and see if there is a problem here. All the best, Espen Sorin Ristache skrev:

Hello, That was the difference between the Ubuntu machine where I tested and your machine. When the support for entering complex characters is disabled from System -> Administration -> Language Support the accented characters work without problems in Oxygen and in other editor applications. It is strange and we will investigate the problem. I tried to enter the same characters in some editor applications on Windows with a Norwegian keyboard layout but it did not work. Can these characters be entered in Windows applications too? Regards, Sorin Espen S. Ore wrote:
