oh where oh where has my oXygen gone?
Oh where, oh where has my oXygen gone? Oh where, oh where can it be? I put fourteen point two on Ubuntu, And now it's hidden from me. I had oXygen 14.1 installed on both my Ubuntu 12.04 machines (work & home). On both machines, the way I launch oXygen is to tap the SUPER key to bring up the dash, and then type "oxy". The applications that show up are Oxygen XML Editor, Oxygen XML Author, and Oxygen XML Developer.[1] This morning I downloaded the new oxygen-64bit.sh and ran it under `sudo` on the work machine. I installed in the default location, deleting the previous version. I then tapped the SUPER key to bring up the dash, typed "oxy" ... and no applications showed up. I notice that there 9 .desktop files in my 14.1 installation at home, and none in my 14.2 installation at work. I looked at one of the .desktop files, and I am pretty sure this is the problem. 1) Did I do something wrong during installation so that the .desktop files were not installed? 2) Anyone else suffer this? 3) Noting that these 9 files, and the change of several file names from 14.1 to 14.2, are the only differences in the list of files in the main /opt/Oxygen XML Editor 14/ directories, can I just copy the 14.1 .desktop file to the 14.2 installation, changing all occurrences of "14.1" to "14.2" as I go? 4) While I'm at it, on my home machine the oXygen icon does not appear in the application-switcher bar that pops up when I press ALT-tab. (Instead I get a generic grey box with a question mark.) It does show up in the launcher. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any answers, and as always thanks for a great program. Hello Syd, When you install Oxygen on Linux (Ubuntu or otherwise) there is a step during the installation wizard that mentions the creation of symlinks. Make sure that this option is enabled because the same option creates the .desktop files from the installation folder. 1) and 2) My guess is you unchecked the option "Create symlinks" (default enabled) during the installation. 3) You could do that, but I would recommend simply reinstalling it in the same folder (you will be prompted to uninstall the current installation) and letting the installer create the symlinks. 4) There are some known issues with the icons in Ubuntu 12 (and Gnome 3 in general). One of the problems is the one you describe with the missing icon. Another issue is that there doesn't seem to be a way to set an icon of an appropriate resolution for the Java application (at least with Java SE 6). Hopefully Java 7 will resolve these problems. We are still testing Oxygen with Java 7 and we will most likely bundle it with v15 of Oxygen. If you'd like, you can install and use Java SE 7 with Oxygen instead of the bundled Java SE 6 from the Oxygen kit. You can rename the 'jre' folder from the Oxygen installation folder and Oxygen will pick up Java from either JAVA_HOME or the PATH environment variable. Let me know if you need further assistance. BTW, I got the original lyrics from http://www.kidsongs.com/lyrics/where-oh-where-has-my-little-dog-gone.html.] OK, finally got into the office with enough time to re-install making sure that the "Create symlinks" box was checked, and presto! -- it worked. Thank you. As for fixing the grey icon in the switcher, if it starts to really bother me, I may try the Java 7 bit. But at the moment I'm content to just wait for oXygen 15. (It's not a problem at all when it's the only application represented by a grey question mark icon -- it gets to be a pain only when there are other applications that also are so represented. That hasn't happened to me much.) Thanks again.
