Hi all, I had a working installation of Oxygen 8.0 with JVM 1.5.9 on Windows XP. When I decided to upgrade to Oxygen 8.1 I also wanted to upgrade my JVM to version 6. I uninstalled Oxygen, JDK and JRE. Afterwards I installed JDK 6 (which includes JRE 6) and Oxygen 8.1. Since this installation I have not been able to start any of the Oxygen applications. The splash screen appears, says "loading application" and hangs at 2%. Processor usage goes up to 100% and I have to kill the process. I read in the forums that changing the JVM might help. Well, I have tried every combination of Oxygen versions 8.0 and 8.1 with JVM version 1.5.9, 1.5.11 and 6 now but the problem persists. Even the combination of Oxygen 8.0 and JVM 1.5.9 that worked before fails. What am I missing? Best regards Paul

Hello, Did you install or change settings of a firewall application on your Windows computer which blocks connections to local ports? Does oXygen start up normally from the command line using the [oXygen-install-folder]/oxygen.bat script? Is it a Tablet PC computer? Regards, Sorin Busch Paul wrote:

Hi Sorin,
Did you install or change settings of a firewall application on your Windows computer which blocks connections to local ports? The computer has the Windows XP firewall running on default settings. There also is a McAfee virus scanner. But both were there before when it still worked. I installed several windows patches via Microsoft update lately. Could it be one of them?
Does oXygen start up normally from the command line using the [oXygen-install-folder]/oxygen.bat script? No. Same symptoms.
Is it a Tablet PC computer? No. Ordinary laptop computer.
Regards Paul

I am not sure. We did not receive other reports about Microsoft updates having such an effect on oXygen. We will investigate this only if the following workaround fails. Please make a backup copy of the folder [user-home-folder]/Application Data/com.oxygenxml, rename it or delete it, start oXygen 8.0 again and enter the license key again. Does it start up normally now? If yes please send us the backup copy of the folder com.oxygenxml to see what is causing the problem. Regards, Sorin

Hello Sorin, the situation did not change: "Application loading", 2%, hang with 100% processor usage. When you told me to do the same again, I just started Oxygen and waited for things to come. Six (!) minutes later Oxygen was there and ready to accept the licence key. It turns out that I was just too impatient and killed the process before the six minutes were over. Above that, every start of Oxygen takes that long, not just the first one. Also, whenever I open a dialog that has to do with files (Save as, Open...) Oxygen's processor usage goes up and the program seems to hang. I think if I invested the time to wait, it would all work as expected, though very slowly. Could it be that McAfee is the culprit? The fact that the issue comes up whenever files are concerned suggests that. On the other hand the task manager shows that it is Oxygen who is using the processor excessively while scan32.exe is using its usual 2-15%. Unfortunately I don't have the files from my working installation any more. I threw them away when I first thought that this wasn't the reason. Maybe the currently available files in com.oxygenxml are just as good. At least we know that the problem is not that Oxygen is not starting at all but rather that startup is very slow. Regards Paul

Hello, Please send a zip archive with the content of your com.oxygenxml folder. Also disable McAfee completely, create a file called log4j.properties in the [oXygen-install-folder] with the following content: log4j.rootCategory= debug, R2 # R2 will write log to file log4j.appender.R2=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.R2.File=oxygen.log log4j.appender.R2.MaxFileSize=12000KB log4j.appender.R2.MaxBackupIndex=4 log4j.appender.R2.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.R2.layout.ConversionPattern=%r %p [ %t ] %c - %m%n start oXygen again and after the startup send us the oxygen.log file created in [oXygen-install-folder].
