Hello, Why is it that Oxygen sometimes fails to start? The process is running the splash screen is shown but the application window never opens. Very annoying. Peter -----<CDE/>----- Center for Document Engineering University of California, Berkeley cde.berkeley.edu

Hi Peter, Some time ago oXygen used to start a new instance every time the program was started. That is very annoying in a desktop installation when for instance the user double clicks on a document to open it, therefore we changed this behavior to allow re-use of an already open instance of oXygen by default. Each new instance of oXygen will look for the file oxygen.lock in the user home directory and if that file is found then it will read from it some information to allow the new instance to connect to the already running instance and pass over eventual command line parameters (to allow opening files in the running oXygen instance). Now if oXygen is force killed it cannot delete the lock file so when you start it again it will read the information about the running oXygen instance and will try to connect to that. As there is no such instance in this case it will fail to connect to that so it will show for a second the message you quoted in the follow up email (http://www.oxygenxml.com/pipermail/oxygen-user/2004-October/000313.html) and will continue to execute normally. Now the fact that it does not seem to start is another problem and should not be related with this info message that appears. One guess is that it tries to load a large document eventually on a single line. You can try renaming/deleting the options directory (user-home/com.oxygenxml) and see if it starts normally. The new version of oXygen will allow formatting documents before loading - this will help working with documents represented on a single line. Ah yes, I've had that happen to me, too. In some cases (I have been working with a 5MB file), it can take several minutes to start... A progress bar or something to show that Oxygen is still alive would be nice and useful; it took me ages to realise that it was not hanging but starting up... The other problem that showed up working with files this big was Oxygen running out of memory and/or losing the synchronisation between the file on disk and what it had in memory. But that happens, in general, only after running for several days without interruption :) cheers eve
